Megumi

We went to Megumi at Sunset Way after enjoying a cup of ice cream at The Daily Scoop and grew weak in the knees thinking about making that long walk back to the main road where we came from.

恵みサラダ - $8.80
Crispy garden greens with special salad dressing prepared all in one bottle/jar, skillfully mixed well before being served to us. Facsinating....

鮭の腹+勘八 - $32.00
While we tasted freshness in our sashimi, its huge price tag taught us a valuable lesson.

キノコとホタテ貝の貝殻 - $15.80
Stir-fried scallops with enoki mushrooms. This would be the only dish I would come back for.

The next 2 dishes were as common as what you can get from any Japanese food stall in XYZ hawker centre.

ウナギ焼き飯 - $9.80
Unagi fried rice, tasted rather plain. Do Japanese really do their fried rice this way?

カツカレーライス - $9.80
Pork cutlet curry rice.

While located at the waterfront is a plus point, overall Megumi didn't leave a lasting impression on me as one Japanese restaurant I would come back for again.

Whole Earth

We chanced upon Whole Earth one day when my lunch kaki and I were searching for a place for lunch at Tanjong Pagar and their $9.90+ set lunch got our attention.

Kong Bah Braised Mushroom
Kong Bah Braised Mushroom

The mushrooms certainly had been braised in gravy for several intensive hours, as each bite onto which resulted bursting of rich flavours. It was my companion’s choice of main, but I almost finished the entire dish myself. Oh no....

Nyonya Curry
Nyonya Curry

Both of us agreed that it tasted even better than the real deal (the meat version)!

Olive Rice
Olive Rice

With extra $1, one gets to ‘upgrade’ steamed rice to olive rice. Simple yet yummy, I fell in love with their olive rice on the 1st bite, for its robust fragrance of fried olive that I simply can't resist. This is one good reason that I must come back again.

Whole Earth

Besides this weekday lunch promotion, Worth Earth’s menu also carries a full array of Thai Peranakan dishes promise to tantalise your taste buds yet go easy on wallet. Don’t just take my word for it, hit Tanjong Pagar today down to Worth Earth and try it yourself.

Everything with Fries

Ask any Singaporean from the older generation about Joo Chiat Road, he or she would tell you this place was once a huge plantation. The name of the owner? No prize for the correct answer.

Then the story may go on that in late 1910s when the government offered to buy over a stretch of his land for infrastructure development in Joo Chiat and Geylang Serai area. Instead of accepting the offer, Mr. Chew constructed a proper throughway across his land and bequeathed it to the authority unconditionally. Moved by his act, the graceful government named this road after him as Joo Chiat Road. (Source: Wikipedia)

History stories aside, ever since Joo Chiat Road was gazetted as a conservation district, most of the peranakan shophouses have been through extensive conservation efforts. Today, they are home to a wide variety of businesses, and the best known – food.

Everything with Fries struck me as a neat and casual cafe as first impression. The waitresses here are all young - under 20 I supposed- and cheerful, ever ready to assist you with a big smile.

True to its name, every(main)thing here does come with fries. Choose it between straight and shoestring cuts. And not forgetting the 5 flavours – original, curry, salt and vinegar, sour cream and onion, garlic and herds.

Too bad it was no-fish day or I would have tried Creamy Salmon in a Cup ($11.90). :(

Cheese Burger - $9.90
Cheese Burger - $9.90
Big as it may appear on the photo, its serving is ideal for ladies.

Grilled Pork Chop - $13.90
Grilled Pork Chop - $13.90
Besides its juicy fresh lettuce crisps and succulent pork crop, my shoestring fries were amazingly yummy. Didn’t fall on either the tough or soggy side, the fries were sprinkled with special seasonings. Hmmm.... Its taste still lingers on my taste buds.

Everything with Fries

After satisfying the carnivorous desires, flip over the menu to find sweet treats like milkshakes and fruit juices. Their must-tries include Nutella Milkshake and Hot Banana Butterscotch Pudding.

Feel free to browse their online menu a click away.

Once Upon A Milkshake

With all the dessert and pastry shops mushroomed up recently in the CBD area, sweet-tooth here would find themselves spoilt by choice. And now here is another reason for them to smile.

Hidden from the sight of pedestrians on the main street is this lovely getaway to help wash away your workday weariness.

The owner must have gone through a great deal of effort to name the different flavours of shakes here. From Agent Strawberry and Sir Cookie & Cream to Chocolate Truffle Castle and Cerious Maple, I just wished I could have them all in one go!

Milkshakes are available in 2 sizes - mini for $3.30 and regular for $5.50. You can also opt for a topping for mere 70 cents.

Fill up your loyalty card with 9 regular milkshakes and your 10th will be on them.

My Litchi Okotomono (lychee flavour, limited edition for CNY) on the left and Spooky Mocha the right.

While its texture of the milkshake is no doubt one of the thickest I ever had, the vanilla taste was rich but not too overwhelming to allow the hint of refreshing lychee flavour to go undetected.

Not to forget the ice cream and milkshakes here are made from premium low-far milk, making them ideal desserts for your worry-free indulgence.

While I found the milkshakes here on the pricey side, the purple and green theme setting as well as the simple furniture here totally won my heart. My companion casually commented that it felt like sitting at an Ikea showroom.

Be here on a Saturday 8pm to 9pm to enjoy your milkshakes and ice creams in candle lights.

P.S. Many thanks to Reiz for the photo editing tips.

Pasta Inc. (MOVED)

Update: Pasta Inc. has been quietly relocated to 35 Keong Saik Road in October 2010.

Shop front

In spite of several checks on streetdirectory.com before making my way down, my friend and I still didn't manage to locate Pasta Inc. without spending a good 1/2 hour like tourists in Jalan Besar. Well, blame it on my poor navigation skills.

Ceiling light

With our pasta dishes priced close to $20, it makes little sense for us not to go for their $22+ set lunch, which comes with soup of the day, pasta (from ala carte menu), a dessert and complimentary tea or coffee.

Zuppa E Funghi con Crema
ZUPPA E FUNGHI CON CREMA
There is actually no soup of the day, but only two selections on the menu - Zuppa di Pesce, which is seafood tomato soup based on my understanding, and this cream of mushrooms. According to the owner, their previous attempt to upkeep a soup of the day had resulted in significant food wastage as patrons eventually fell back on these two flagships.

And he was right. This was probably one of the best mushroom soups I recently had. Richly creamy soup with comfortingly robust mushroom flavour to chase all your blues away, a must-try for all mushroom lovers.

Spaghetti al Frutti di Mare E Nero di Seppia - $19.90
SPAGHETTI AL FRUTTI DI MARE E NERO DI SEPPIA - $19.90
My Italian vocabulary might be limited, but my foodie instinct tells me that seppia is squid ink in this context. And this is exactly what I was here for.

The spaghetti was cooked to perfection with squid ink sauce, made even more savoury by a light touch of garlic. Every slurp was pure pleasure. It would have been better if most of the clams were filled.

On ya, remember your serviette.

FETTUCCINE AL MOLLUSCHI E ZAFFERANO - $21.90
My friend's choice of main - flat pasta with seafood in homemade saffron cream sauce.

Chocolate Mousse
Chocolate mousse was the dessert of the day. Try their tiramisu and apple pie if there is room for more.

Pasta Inc.

Our dining experience was overall pleasant one. The service staff was rather attentive to our needs. After our meal, a short conversation with the friendly owner revealed that Pasta Inc. would find a new home after the current contract ends this year. We both said hooray to that!

This set lunch is available only on weekdays, until 31/03/2010. Other days, quote 'Hungrygowhere' to get 50% off your 2nd pasta.
